What To Wear With A Neckerchief

Day 4 - Kings Canyon and Uluru

Here we are on the fourth day and second day in the middle of the desert in Central Australia.
Today woke up at 4:00 am in the morning to start our wonderful tour into the outback.
the night in the hostel was not the best because the air conditioning worked in fits and starts, mingling with the smell of insect repellent! Returning in the morning, we expect a 24 seat minibus, but we are only eight daring to face the heat of the desert: two Dutch women, we and two pairs respectively Polish and English, this meant three seats on each bus and the ability to completely lie down and sleep well!

The first thing to do when you go into the wilderness is to have with them a quart of water for every hour you're in the outback, dehydration is the greatest danger!

During the morning, as the trip is very long, we stopped three or four times to buy water and have breakfast, but above all to break the time on the minibus!

The Australian desert has nothing similar with respect to our conception of desert, it is an infinite set of bushes and small green plants, sprouting from the soil a reddish color of brown, the color of the ground varies depending on the sunlight!

Here we are finally at the first stage of the tour: Kings Canyon. Watarrka, this is the Aboriginal name, and is the name of the homonymous national park site around the canyon.
The path ahead is of Corca 3 kilometers, to discover the wonderful nature of the outback. The first walk about the perimeter of the canyon, then move on to climb it.
The landscape is incredible, like being inside a rainforest surrounded by red rocks giganteste to dominate the skyline.
This canyon, unlike the Grand Canyon is different backgrounds, in this If you are not only weathering of rocks but the rocks themselves, having been eroded and have formed an arch below them, collapse, creating a small valley between them.
Continuing along the path, the guide will show you the types of vegetation within the canyon.
After the walk we expected to climb, the situation was at the foot of the canyon 42 ° and 54 ° in the "top".

Four of us decided to climb the canyon (including myself), others attracted by the air conditioning back in the minibus, the route is steep but short, only 20 minutes. During the climb, given the temperature, the feeling is three times as much sweat, but once on top you can enjoy The views are incredible: everything around me is an endless stretch of green with red spots, totally flat to the horizon!

Once the tour starts in the Kings Canyon, Uluru target, as usual, before reaching the destination, we stop for a quick lunch and a refreshing swim in the pool at the resort near Watarrka.
Back on the minibus, after about two hours away and in the middle of sleep, we hear a noise from the engine, followed by a white cloud, air conditioning ... Goodbye!

is finally on the horizon like a rock formation in Uluru, but to the astonishment of the crew, the guide tells us that there is Ayers Rock (Uluru the English name), but it is the mountain of Mount Connor or forgotten! This ranges is two hours from Ayers Rock is a mountain and layered with training, each rock layer is 100 years (if I remember correctly ...).

Past and not forgotten, Mt Connor, we arrive at Uluru in time to watch the sunset. The place where we spend the night camping is a little far from the red rock, once placed the baggage in the tents we are moving towards the viewpoint.
The show is reviewed and those seen on postcards, books and television, but this time I am there and no words! During the sunset Uluru change continuous color from deep red that we usually see, the gray, all in no time!

We return to camp and into the kitchen to keep us company, is one of the most dangerous spiders in the world: Red Spider! After dinner, we are ready to go to bed, my choice is clearly to sleep in the open and the lights went out, no choice was more apt: the sky was a collection of millions of stars visible to the naked eye and shining, including the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds, icredibile!

Here we are at Uluru morning: wake up at 4 o'clock, a small observation of the sky and my favorite constellation: the Southern Cross, then off to Ayers Rock to see the sunrise!
After half an hour of travel and check-in nell'Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park, off the bus and we come to "Rock"! All around Uluru The atmosphere is strange, almost sacred, the grandeur of this rock, all its colors during and after dawn and its many facets, of meters underground!

In some parts along the way you can not take pictures because they are sites sacred to Aborigines, for the same reason it would not be possible to climb Uluru, but it is still allowed and many visitors do. On the walls of rock there are also aboriginal designs, situated near a small pond at the foot of a corner the rock.

Describe each part of Ayers Rock would be too long, you can simply say that are spaced smooth surfaces, smoothed by the wind caves and cave-like! Fantastic!

The last leg of the tour is Kata Tjuta or The Olgas, there are three different rocks, with different backgrounds than Uluru, in fact they are not monoliths.

Between a rock and the other is a small valley, the two walls give a view of the moon, Mars vision of becoming when the walls take on the color red!

In the valley flows a small river, the vegetation is green and lush, desert plants have in fact not need much water to survive, but only the strictly necessary.

Day 3 - Alice Springs

Even today, wake up at 6 am for the flight of 8.45, Destination Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Central Australia, or in the middle of nowhere!
and Qantas Flight 'was perfect, breakfast film and outbuildings. After two hours we are at the airport of Alice, renamed by me and my English friend> "Heathrow", because of its size (and 'about 1 / 4 of Orio al Serio!).
Off-airport waiting for us by a small minibus with the logo of our hostel .
The temperature 'of 40 degrees, the air and' greenhouse < e' come essete in una sauna, ottimo per la mia sinusite!
Once you get on the bus, the driver (a crazy guy) starts to explain the area and its attractions more 'important are all completely natural!
The entry of Alice Springs' a sort of natural transition between two ranges (rock formations similar to the hills without vegetation).
In the picture you can 'see clearly where the ranges and western ends where it begins the eastern one.

Once the check-in at the hostel and place the bags Nenella 10-bed room (air conditioning), we went to the city center '. Alice Springs is incredible, this is probably the capital of what should be the "real" outback Australia and capital (ie the Australian desert and the "wild life"). On one side of the street is' the Todd River, in the dry and on the left there are shops and houses made from wood. There are also many parks (and alcohol free area) where they camp Aborigines, who usually sleep on the bed of the river or hospitality centers. In fact, people get this week conspicuously an agreement in terms of dollars that allows them to survive. At the same
of this land, the Aborigines are the oldest civilization in the world, there would be many other things to write about Aboriginal people but are just beginning the study, if I'll post something later, together with the indigenous Torres Strait.
back to Alice Springs, once in town we drove the "walking tour" of the Lonely Planet, we bought bread, ham, melon and mango for our dinner! Continued ...

Day 2 - Great Ocean Road

new day, a new early, this time we expect a 24 seat minibus just outside the hostel at 7.30 am, destination Great Ocean Road along the west coast of Melbourne.
The official website of the tour can be found at the following link: Great Ocean Road Tour

enstende This long road for 300 kilometers of coastline from Melbourne to Port Campbell, curve after curve, beach after beach, never the same throughout, with beautiful landscapes, such as to leave no words, and in some cases, out of breath!

Returning to the trip, once you get to Melbourne, we went through the second city 'of the great state of Victoria: Geelong, a quiet town 10 km from the sea.

Geelong Pass, we enter the B100 road, or the Great Ocean Road. The first country 'Torquay, the surfing capital of Victoria state, in this city you can find stores and outlets with the most prestigious brands, it is the birthplace Quicksilver and Rip Curl, famous Australian brand! Continue for this wonderful way to get at Bells Beach, 7 miles west of Torquay
, this beach is legendary because every year there is a stage of world championship surfing during the Easter period. The beach is a small bay and you can visit along the ravine that divides the sea from the city, a veritable mountain path!
time in this stage was not the best, I had to wear a sweatshirt because the wind was strong enough and cold, but a good hot tea, we pulled up the moral in the midst of this cold, the ocean was a professional surfer who was training! Crazy!

All ready, back on the bus, the guide was kind of a mix between Schumacher and Casey Stoner, my English friend was quite concerned by the speed and the constant twists and turns, really fun. Here
to the next stage: "The White Queen", or The Split Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse built in 1891, originally called the eagle's nest, is white with red roof and looks out over Eagle Rock. The lighthouse is completely surrounded by lush green bushes, a cliff on the ocean, you can also see a rock (Eagle Rock) alone, as a rock, a few meters from the lighthouse. Post the link of the site: The Split Point Lighthouse . The path around the lighthouse is a few hundred meters, all immersed in the bushes, really nice!

After this pause for about twenty minutes, it still comes back on the bus racing, bow direction of the Great Ocean Road! The bow is a sign of recognition of this street and a pmaggio to those who built it and those who died during the First World War. Reference: www.greatoceanrd.com.au .

After the stop, again via bus, through turns and straight, always accompanied the ocean and beautiful beaches on the left and a large vegetation on the right. It goes faster and faster ...

Here, at lunchtime, arrived in Apollo Bay, this village was originally just a fishing village, but today has become a great camping! Walking Apollo Bay you can see koalas sleep in trees (strano. ..) and photograph them, but it is illegal to touch them, as in all other states of Australia except Queensland.

had finished eating we returned to our bus, ready to compete with other tourist minibuses along the road that overlooks the channel Bass (Bass Strait), which is the strait that separates Australia from Tazmania (Taz Taz), some people begin to be nervous to the rider, others are beginning to change the color of their skin white or green ... I enjoy!

begins in the afternoon and the sun finally appears at the beginning a bit 'timid and later increasingly strong, the mood changes for the better! Next stop rainforest.

Mait's Rest Rainforest is a rainforest, it seems to be in the middle of the Amazon, only that I am in Australia, in summer, 5 km from the ocean! Everything around me is green, the plants that are there are very low to very high, as I had never seen! The route is a mile, maybe less, of ups and downs and wooden bridges!

By now the sun is shining over our heads and scrap the minibus, we go in the direction of the 12 apostles FINALLY those 12 stacks I've ever seen in the picture come true!
Here we take the road overlooking the ocean and this is finally the good old apostles (one collapsed in 2004 if I remember correctly), I remain speechless for at least 5 minutes and my English friend is appalled by this show just got lucky to see them with the sunshine and cloudless!
The path to the 12 Apostles is a path that leads directly to a sort of peninsula overlooking the ocean where you can see on the right most of the apostles and the other on the left! Paying 60 dollars (36 Euros) is can take a ride in a helicopter and fly over the area.
The only downside are the millions of flies buzzing around you, nose, ears and everywhere, really annoying!

fascinated by these wonders we go to Loch Ard George, a beach set in a small bay where the entrance is a sort of passing through two small rocks! The water is crystal clear and around on walls you can see stalactites and stalagmites, especially in small crevices!

You return the minibus towards Port Campbell, the last city to be visited before returning to Melbourne. There remains only one thing to visit: London Bridge!
The London Bridge is a rock formation, a cliff with two arches, forming a peninsula between the coast and the ocean. In 1990, following sea erosion, the part that connected the tip of the peninsula to the coast has collapsed, leaving a rock in the middle of the sea forming arc, spectacular!

This is the Great Ocean Road, one day probably is not enough to fully enjoy it and probably a few hundred lines can only give a glimpse of what really is a spectacle of nature!

Day 1 - Happy New Year

I'm back home after this fantastic journey of ten intense days!
start from the beginning: January 1, 2008, probably the New Year's barbeque was not the best and my stomach has felt great, giving me a long night after dinner in the exotic style ...

After having slept two hours, I finally took the bus and the train to Brisbane Domestic Airport, about 20 minutes from downtown. The first flight was with Virgin Blue, the airline is the Virgin brand (the record to be clear dela) by Richard Branson, the atmosphere in the plane is fun and there is also the background music, I spent well my 2 and a half hour flight.

Once in Melbourne I noticed that probably the bad weather is only a matter of Queensland, in fact arrive in this city there was not a cloud in the sky ... Finally!

Some historical notes and impressions of Melbourne:
this city was founded in May 1835 by John Batman who bought 240,000 hectares of land by Aboriginal people in exchange for objects of various kinds. The river crossing is called Melbourne Yarra River. After 5 years since its foundation, Melbourne had 10,000 people coming from Europe, which gave way to a period of prosperity until the Depression of the late '800. After the Second World War, Melbourne was populated with people from all over the world, resulting in economic development and building.
Melbourne has developed from east to west along the bay called Port Phillip, eponymous name for Phillip Island (MotoGP), the center of the city lies north of the bay, over the Yarra River. The Formula 1 circuit is located in Albert Park, Albert Park is precisely in the southeast of the city.

My tour began in Swanston Street, one of the main streets of Melbourne, which like almost all Australian cities is rectangular. After crossing Queens Bridge, and visited the Southbank, or the southern part of town, after the river, I photographed the ' eurekaskydeck . It 'was very interesting to take the next bridge, The Travellers, is a pedestrian bridge with laminated glass with the words on each, the nation and the number of immigrants in Australia, very interesting!

cross the bridge, I took the City Tram, a free tram that runs along the outer ring of the city center. I was able to see Federation Square, with its palaces really special. Facing the square is the cathedral of St Paul, another interesting building is the Forum Theatre, not bad.

the riverside path, turning left, is the Parliament of Victoria. Turn left (Lt Burke Street) is passed through the door that is the entrance to Chinatown, where you can see the famous "fork of discord" so that made headlines in Milan.
At the end of the street, turning left takes you to the Mall or the Mall in Melbourne.

Unlike Brisbane, in this city the atmosphere is more European, more ancient, the roads are wider, with the tram to the center, the buildings are not too recent and not too immersed in nature, although there are lots of parks. Melbourne is also a city much attention to sports, it hosts many major sporting events and is also very strong influence of art, with spaces for exhibitions and performances.

About immigration, I decided to visit Lygoon Street, also known as Italy locals. The road is very long and full of bars and restaurants, out of curiosity I started reading the menu and I immediately start a conversation with a waiter of Italian descent but born in Australia. When you speak with one of their beautiful country, you can see their eyes shine, I remember the owner of "The Spaghetti" that Mr. Nunzio, born in Australia but with Sicilian roots, he also offered a coffee and when he knew I worked as a waiter even offered me a job, incredible!

Back from Lygoon Street I looked at the prisons, in truth some small, are now used by the RMIT University of Melbourne as a hall and classrooms (try to think about going to class to Bassone ...).
