On 9 December 2009, the European Commission, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Bank for development of the Council of Europe have given the green light to the Western Balkans Investment Framework to fund major projects in the Western Balkans.
The goal is to bring together and coordinate various funds and loans to implement the projects of primary importance for countries Western Balkans. Initially, support will focus on infrastructure, and then spread to small and medium enterprises to improve energy efficiency and other sectors. The
WBIF joint consists of a grant facility and joint lending facility to finance major projects. In particular, joint grant facility will be used to help finance the preparation and implementation of major projects in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia.
Projects will be selected on the basis of real importance for the country and the ability to support the priorities established by the Within the European Union accession process.
